FHSEYBB - New Umpire Program

UPDATE:
You must be 14 yo to be an umpire at the beginning of the 2018 Spring Baseball season.

Dear Community Members,

As we battle through the cold of winter, spring and more importantly, baseball season are just around the corner.  I was tasked with overhauling the umpire program which I know is a topic that has much discussion.  To some it is an avocation.  To others it is a necessary evil.  This is a big task to improve upon our program.  I would like to walk you through what we are currently working on:

  • There was a change made with the assigning process. We have hired Joe Stafford who comes to us with many years of umpiring and assigning experience to not only schedule but help train our staff.
  • We are implementing a new assigning tool that will make all assigning and communication available through Arbiter Sports.
  • We are working with our partners in the Indianapolis Umpires Association, which is known around the country as one of the premier amateur umpire associations, to help with training and mentoring of our new umpires.
  • Umpires will be evaluated and placed on the appropriate games based on this process.

We know that this will take time to get it where we want it to be, but I feel as though we have the right people in place and the support of the board to make these changes.

You may be asking what does this have to do with me.  I would like to share some details with you.  There is a major concern nationwide on the declining numbers of umpires.

  • Only 20% of umpires make it to their third year.
    • The top reason for this is due to a job or family change.  The second reason is due to a lack of sportsmanship from coaches and adult spectators.
  • 70 % who make it to their third year stay in it beyond six years.

My commitment is to work to recruit and train the umpires in our league and give our players the best experience they can get.

Here is what I need from you:

  • If you or someone you know is interested please reach out and become an umpire.  If you are not part of the solution, you might be part of the problem.
  • Respect- As we are teaching and training these kids, please be respectful.  No one feels worse about missing a call than the person that does it.  It is going to happen!! Help us to keep give our umpires a good experience so they want to come back.

We will be hosting an umpire clinic for anyone that is interested on February 24th.  The details are below.  We will have instruction from current and former umpires at the professional and collegiate level.  Take advantage of this opportunity and help us to make the experience the best for everyone involved on the field this summer. Please contact Joe Stafford at jlstafford1869@gmail.com with any questions.
